CRC Launches Virtual Blood Drive to Support the American Red Cross
Right now, communities across the state are facing unimaginable health challenges amidst the pandemic. Our community partner, the American Red Cross, is one of the largest sources of life-saving blood for hospitals in the United States, but is currently facing a blood shortage they have never seen before. During social distancing, many blood drives are being cancelled and people are choosing to forego blood donations. But according to the Red Cross, the need for blood is constant. Every two seconds in America someone needs blood, therefore, one of the most important things you can do is to give blood.
At California Resources Corporation (CRC), we remain steadfast in our core values of Character, Responsibility and Commitment. To do our part and support this essential organization and the critical services they provide, CRC created a “Virtual Blood Drive” last month and invited employees, who are willing and healthy, to consider donating blood. Numerous employees volunteered for the event which meant meeting the eligibility requirements, scheduling an appointment and following the American Red Cross’ enhanced safety protocols.
CRC Operations Engineering Lead John Torpey was one of our volunteers and shared, “I had not donated blood in a while. When the call went out to CRC employees that blood was needed urgently, I thought it was the least I could do to help during these difficult times. The donation process was a piece of cake and I’m so glad I did it.”
Even through the pandemic, blood donations are considered an “essential activity” by most counties for treating cancer patients, accident victims, patients who need surgery and countless other individuals. We hope others will consider donating blood as we are all in this together.
